As you will be aware its been a strange year
for weather with April, May and June being very dry and July, August and
September very wet and quite cold. However it did not seem to do the fishing
any harm, although fly hatches were small and spasmodic, due in part to the
low water temperatures, the upside of this was that Trout seem to keep
interested through the dog days of August.
The constant water levels did of course help the Salmon runs, with less Salmon falling prey to the seal population as the Salmon were able to run the rivers almost at any time and were less vulnerable than when water levels are low and the Salmon are drifting in and out with the tide. The Hotel waters ended the season with 7120 Brown Trout entered in the fishing log, well up on last year, with three over 7lb and too many to mention between 3lb and 6lb. The largest Brown Trout caught, and the winner of the Ian Hay challenge cup for 2007, was 7lb 1oz landed by John Martin. A bottle of malt will be winging its way to John with our congratulations. I would like to mention the 7lb Trout caught by Ray Gwyn Jones which was just one ounce short of the record for the season, we will be sending a bottle of wine to Ray. Sea Trout/Finnock caught and returned were just short of last years at 293 fish booked. The best Seatrout booked was 3lb to John Bruce. Salmon numbers were up on last year with 70 Salmon caught and 56 returned. The largest Salmon caught by a Hotel guest on Loch Stack and the winner of the Mac Stephenson Ghillies Trophy for 2007 was Paul Kirby. Well done and a bottle of Malt is travelling down to Paul. Loch Caladail which the Hotel put a boat on for the first time this year fished well although it suffered from colder than normal water temperatures which adversely affected the normally abundant fly life. The average weight of the fish caught was 1.75lb based on the 88 fish caught. Our thanks go to all of our guests, past and present, whose support and enthusiasm makes the Hotel come alive during the season. Best wishes Patrick and Judy
